FAQ

Answers to the questions that come up most when setting up remote access.

Getting started

What is ArgonDesk?

ArgonDesk lets you reach Windows PCs you control from anywhere over an encrypted tunnel. Sessions use native Windows Remote Desktop on the Host. Install Host on the PC you want to reach and Viewer on the machine you connect from. Your PC’s Remote Desktop port stays off the public internet.

What’s the difference between Host and Viewer?

Install Host on the Windows PC you want to control. Install Viewer on the machine you connect from. The web dashboard is for account, team, and computer management — connecting to a desktop uses the Viewer app. Per-computer Connection Settings (display, audio, clipboard, and local resources) live in the Viewer app, not the web dashboard.

How do I get started?

Create an account and start your free trial. On the Host PC, install ArgonDesk Host, sign in, finish Remote Desktop readiness, and enable access. On another Windows PC, install ArgonDesk Viewer, sign in, pick the computer, and connect.

Do I need port forwarding, a VPN, or a static IP?

No. ArgonDesk uses an encrypted tunnel between Viewer and Host. You don’t open RDP on the public internet or configure router port forwards for typical home or office NAT.

How is this different from opening RDP or using a VPN?

Opening Remote Desktop to the internet or running a full VPN to your desk adds setup risk and complexity. ArgonDesk keeps native Windows Remote Desktop on the Host and carries the session through an encrypted tunnel — so you can use an existing Windows PC across networks without exposing the RDP port or deploying a VPN for that one machine. It does not replace Windows or Microsoft Remote Desktop Services licenses.

Windows support

Which Windows versions does ArgonDesk support?

ArgonDesk is Windows-only. Supported editions for Host and Viewer:

Host supports

The PC you connect to (needs Remote Desktop).

  • Windows 10 / 11 Pro, Enterprise & Education
  • Windows Server 2016, 2019 & 2022 (RDP-capable editions)

Viewer supports

The PC you connect from.

  • Windows 10 & 11
  • Windows Server 2016, 2019 & 2022

Not supported

  • Host on Windows Home or Starter (including Windows 10/11 Home)
  • Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 (Host or Viewer)
  • Windows Server 2012 R2 and earlier
  • Mac Host or Viewer
  • Linux Host or Viewer
Does ArgonDesk work on Windows Home?

It depends whether the machine is a Host or a Viewer:

Host (PC you connect to)

No. Windows Home cannot accept Remote Desktop connections, so ArgonDesk cannot host on Home editions. Use Pro, Enterprise, Education, or a supported Server edition.

Viewer (PC you connect from)

Yes. You can install ArgonDesk Viewer on Windows 10/11 Home and connect to a supported Host.

Do I still need a Windows license that supports Remote Desktop?

Yes. ArgonDesk is the encrypted tunnel and apps — it does not include or replace Microsoft Windows. Each Host needs a Windows edition that supports Remote Desktop (typically Pro, Enterprise, Education, or Server). For multi-user sessions on one host you also need valid Windows Server and RDS Client Access Licenses.

Can I use ArgonDesk on Mac or Linux?

Not at this time. ArgonDesk Host and Viewer are Windows-only. Mac and Linux hosts and viewers are not supported.

Sessions and limits

Why can’t two people use my Windows 10/11 PC at the same time?

Windows client editions (Pro, Enterprise, Education) allow only one interactive remote desktop session at a time. If a second Viewer connects, Windows disconnects the first user. That is a Microsoft OS limit — not an ArgonDesk restriction. ArgonDesk tunnels native Remote Desktop; it does not add multi-session capability to those client editions. For several people logged in at once on one machine, you need Windows Server with Remote Desktop Services.

What do I need for multiple people on one host at the same time?

You need a Windows Server host with the Remote Desktop Session Host role, plus valid Microsoft licensing: Windows Server CALs and Remote Desktop Services (RDS) CALs (Per User or Per Device). ArgonDesk provides the encrypted tunnel to that host — it does not include or replace Microsoft Windows or RDS licenses. You are responsible for owning the correct licenses.

Does ArgonDesk include Microsoft Windows or RDS licenses?

No. You must own a valid Windows edition that supports Remote Desktop on each Host, and any Windows Server / RDS Client Access Licenses required for your deployment. ArgonDesk only provides tunneling, Viewer/Host apps, and account management.

Setup and troubleshooting

Remote Desktop isn’t working. How do I enable it?

On the Host PC, open ArgonDesk Host and use the readiness checks. Tap Fix automatically on Pro+ to enable Remote Desktop, start the TermService, and open the Windows firewall rule group. You can also enable Remote Desktop in Windows Settings → System → Remote Desktop.

My computer shows offline. What should I check?

Confirm ArgonDesk Host is signed in and Access is enabled, the Host service is running, and the PC is awake and online. Closing the Host window keeps it in the system tray — Quit from the tray fully exits. Check that your firewall or antivirus is not blocking ArgonDesk.

Can I connect with a Windows account that has no password?

No. Windows Remote Desktop rejects blank-password accounts for network logons. Set a password on the Windows account you use to sign in remotely before connecting.

My PC sleeps while I’m away. How do I keep it reachable?

Sleeping or hibernating PCs go offline. In ArgonDesk Host, enable Keep this computer awake for remote access, or adjust Windows power settings so the machine does not sleep when plugged in.

Could firewall or antivirus block ArgonDesk?

Yes. Allow ArgonDesk Host, the Host service, and the Viewer through Windows Firewall (and any third-party antivirus network shield). The Host readiness panel can enable the Remote Desktop firewall group automatically on Pro+.

Where do I change display, audio, and clipboard settings?

In ArgonDesk Viewer, open Settings on the computer you want to reach (Connection Settings) — like the classic Remote Desktop Client settings. They’re saved on this Viewer PC for that computer only and apply the next time you connect, not mid-session. These settings are not in the web dashboard and are not synced across Viewer installs.

Display

Resolution, scaling, and multi-monitor behavior.

Local Resources

Clipboard, drives, printers, audio, cameras, COM ports, and other local devices.

Experience

Visual quality and connection-speed trade-offs.

Advanced

Keyboard combos, reconnection, and other connection options.

Good to know

  • Saving mid-session needs a reconnect to take effect.
  • Nested Audio and More panels are fine, but you still need the main Save.
  • Drives and cameras are all-or-nothing — you can’t share just one.
How do clipboard, drives, printers, and audio work in Viewer?

Local Resources let you bridge devices between your Viewer PC and the remote computer. Defaults keep common conveniences on and higher-risk devices off:

On by default

  • Clipboard, printers, smart cards, and WebAuthn (security keys)

Off by default

  • Drives, cameras, COM ports, location, and other PnP devices

Good to know

  • Drives and cameras are all-or-nothing — you can’t share just one.
  • Audio plays on this computer by default; microphone recording is off.
  • Keyboard combos apply in fullscreen only by default.
Can admins restrict clipboard, drives, or other session options?

On Team plans, admins set Session restrictions per user (Users → edit a user or invite), separate from Preferences (Rename, Remove, Restart). Each option can be set to User decides, Enforce on, or Enforce off. Enforced options are locked in the Viewer’s Connection Settings. Display and Experience settings stay user-controlled, and admins are not restricted.
